The Purpose of a Sign

A sign in the Gospels is a real work that points. It is not a performance, and it is not only a metaphor.

The first sign, water become wine, manifests His glory, and His disciples believe. That is John's pattern. The work is public. The glory is His. is the right answer. Curiosity that will not believe is not.

After the feeding, He tells the crowd they wanted the bread, not the sign. So a miracle can be received as a service and still be missed.

What this house will not do

It will not turn every healing into a secret code. It will not deny the healing because a sermon can be preached without it. The man born blind can see. Lazarus comes out. Those sentences are the text.

Where the Gospels differ on a count, a timing, or a place, the card says so in a sentence. The longer sorting of those differences is Supposed Contradictions. The shelf of the works themselves is Miracles of Jesus.

When John asks if He is the one, Jesus answers with the works. The blind see, the lame walk, the dead are raised, the poor hear good news. The signs are His reply. They are not a side show beside the reply.

This is a deeper teaching under Signs, Not a Show. Its home is The Life of Jesus.
