Copyist Numerals

Hebrew numbers were easy to mistype. A clash between 40,000 and 4,000 in two ledgers is not the same kind of problem as “who is Jesus.”

Kings says one figure. Chronicles says another. The ages of a king do not match. The price of a threshing floor comes out in shekels in one book and in a larger unit in another.

Some of those pairs have a clean narrative answer. Some of them are almost certainly copyist numerals: a scribe’s hand slipping on letters that also served as numbers.

What the habit is

Inerrancy, as Christians have actually confessed it, attaches to the words God breathed out, not to every stroke a later copyist made. The Chicago Statement said this in public: we do not claim that every extant copy is perfect, and we do claim that the original words can be recovered with high confidence for doctrine and life.

Hebrew numerals are a known weak joint. Letters stand for numbers. A small mark changes 40 into 400. Parallel books (Samuel–Kings and Chronicles) give us the pairs we can see.

Why this is not “the Bible contradicts itself” in the sense the list wants

A transmission slip is a fact about manuscripts. It is not a fact about two authors intending two different histories of the same thing and both claiming for the slip.

Where a number carries theological weight, such as how many animals on the ark or how many days in the tomb, the text is stable and the clash, if any, belongs to another type. Where two chronicles disagree about a garrison count, you are usually looking at this type or at Rounding and Convention.

How to test an item

  1. Are the two numbers the kind that Hebrew letters confuse easily?
  2. Does one tradition already preserve the other figure?
  3. Does anything in or the change if the garrison was 700 or 7,000?

Honesty matters here. Do not pretend every numeral pair is a deep literary device. Some are. Some are copies. Name them.

Where this type shows up

The specific pairs live in one catalog: Supposed Contradictions. Search that catalog for Ahaziah, overseers, or other Kings–Chronicles figures. Each item stamps this type when it is the right tool.

The kinds side by side: Contradictions.
