The Person in View

One writer names the person in focus. Another names the group that was there. Naming one is not a denial of the rest.

September 20, 2026

This is the type most people meet first, and the one the lists never get tired of.

Matthew says two blind men called out near Jericho. Mark names Bartimaeus. Luke speaks of a blind man. The claim is: the Bible cannot decide whether it was one man or two.

It can. One writer puts the lamp on the man whose name and cry he wants you to hear. Another tells you he was not standing there alone.

What the habit is

Call it spotlighting. Older books sometimes say synecdoche, a part named for the whole. The Gospels do this constantly with people, angels, and places.

  • One demoniac is named; Matthew says two met Jesus in that country.
  • Mary Magdalene is the voice at the tomb; the other women are not erased by her being named first.
  • “The angel” speaks; another says the women saw two.

A newspaper can write “the president arrived” without meaning the motorcade was empty. is allowed the same ordinary speech.

Why it is not a contradiction

A contradiction would be: “only one person was there” set against “two people were there.” Spotlighting is not the word only. It is the word this one.

If Mark wanted to deny the second blind man, he had a way to say it. He did not. He gave a name, a cry, and a story. Matthew gave the count. Those two sentences can both be true at the same hour.

The same move works in the other direction. A writer may say “the women” and another may walk you up to Mary’s sentence. Group language is not a claim that no one in the group can be singled out.

How to test an item

  1. Does either text use “only,” “no one else,” or a hard exclusion? If not, you do not have a collision yet.
  2. Is one account simply longer, named, or closer to the speaker?
  3. Would an ordinary witness talk this way? If yes, the list is asking the Bible to write like a deposition, not like a Gospel.

Where this type shows up

The specific pairs live in one catalog: Supposed Contradictions. Search that catalog for Jericho, Bartimaeus, Gerasenes, angels, or the women at the tomb. Each item stamps this type when it is the right tool.

Reading a shorter account as a denial of the longer one is the fallacy called The Argument from Silence.

The kinds side by side: Contradictions.
