Matthias

Chosen by lot to take Judas's place. Qualified because he had been with them from the baptism of John. Never mentioned again.

After the ascension, Peter says the had to be fulfilled and Judas's place taken. The man must have been with them the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among them, from the baptism of John until the day he was taken up. Two men are put forward: Joseph called Barsabbas, also called Justus, and Matthias. They pray and cast lots. The lot falls on Matthias. He is numbered with the eleven ().

That is the whole New Testament account. He is not in lists, because those lists still have Judas. He is not named again in Acts. No letter is his. No death is told.

Later lists of the seventy, and later passings about how Matthias died, are thin and late. They are not how we know him. We know the qualification the apostles set, and that they used a lot, and that he was counted in. The lot is not a model the rest of Acts repeats. It is what they did before Pentecost, for this one empty place.

This is a deeper teaching under The Apostles. Its home is Sermons and Series.
