Simon Peter: what the New Testament says, the death it foretells but does not narrate, and the letters that carry his name.

Simon, son of John, also called Cephas and Peter. Brother of Andrew. From Bethsaida, fishing the sea of Galilee, with a house in Capernaum where his mother-in-law lies sick (, , ). He is married. Paul later says the apostles' wives travel with them, and Cephas is the example ().
He confesses Jesus as the Christ at Caesarea Philippi (). He denies him in the high priest's courtyard (). By the sea, after the resurrection, he is restored in a conversation this lesson will not turn into a sermon (). The same chapter says that when Peter is old he will stretch out his hands and be carried where he does not want to go. John says Jesus said this to show by what kind of death Peter would glorify God.
Acts puts him in Jerusalem, Samaria, Lydda, Joppa, and Caesarea, then in prison, then at "another place" (). Galatians puts him in Antioch (). The road, in order, is Journeys of the Apostles.
1 Peter names "Peter, an of Jesus Christ" (). 2 Peter names "Simeon Peter" (). The second letter has been argued over because it does not sound like the first. The argument is real. The letter still claims him. This lesson does not try the case. It also does not hand of Mark to Peter as if he signed it. Early memory says Mark wrote what Peter taught. That memory is not a verse, and the book is not "Peter's Gospel."
The death is not in Acts. John 21 foretells a death he does not choose. 2 Peter says it is near. Later writers put it in Rome, by crucifixion. The detail that it was head downward is later than the claim of a . Clement, near the end of the first century, says Peter suffered and went to glory, and is not explicit about the manner. None of the later lines is a chapter of . The foretelling is.
This is a deeper teaching under The Apostles. Its home is Sermons and Series.
