Lesson
The Call of Abram
At 75 he leaves Haran. A land, a nation, and a blessing for all families. Isaac is born when Abraham is 100. The hard number is the 430 years.
October 7, 2026
Terah takes Abram, Sarai, and Lot from Ur of the Chaldeans toward Canaan, and they settle in Haran. Terah dies there. The LORD has said to Abram, go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land I will show you. A great nation. A great name. A blessing, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
Abram is 75 when he departs from Haran. He takes Sarai and Lot and the people they have gathered, and he comes to Canaan, and he builds altars. A famine sends him to Egypt, and he comes back. He and Lot separate. Lot chooses the Jordan valley, toward Sodom. Abram stays in the hill country. God tells him to walk the land, because He will give it to him.
The cut
Abram asks what he will be given, since he is childless and a servant of his house is his heir. God says the heir will be his own son, and He brings him outside and tells him to number the stars. Abram believes the LORD, and it is counted to him as righteousness. Paul will stand on that sentence.
The same day God cuts a covenant. Animals are divided. A dread comes. God tells Abram his offspring will be sojourners in a land not theirs, afflicted 400 years, and that He will judge the nation they serve, and they will come out with great possessions. Abram himself will die in peace. A smoking fire pot and a flaming torch pass between the pieces. The scroll is how this 400, the 430 of Exodus, and the 430 of Galatians sit together. They are not the same sentence copied three times.
A name, a sign, a son
Abram is 99 when God appears again, renames him Abraham, and gives circumcision as the sign of the covenant. Sarai becomes Sarah. A son is named before he is conceived. Abraham laughs. Sarah laughs. Isaac's name is the laugh. He is born when Abraham is 100. On the timeline's count, if Abram was born when Terah was 70, the call is year 2023 and Isaac's birth is year 2048.
Stephen says Abraham left Haran after his father died. Terah dies at 205. If Abraham was born when Terah was 70, Terah still had sixty years to live when Abraham was 75. The straight reading of Genesis 11:26 is that Terah was 70 when he fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran. The reading that fits Stephen is that Terah was 70 when he began to father sons, and Abram was born later, when Terah was 130. The timeline card follows Genesis 11:26 and says so. The speech in Acts is not thrown out. Two honest ways of counting one family are not a reason to drop either verse.
Sodom is judged in these same years. Abraham asks God to spare the city for fifty righteous, then forty-five, and down to ten. Ten are not found. Lot is brought out. Abraham sees the smoke. Later God tells him to take Isaac and offer him. Abraham goes. The angel stops his hand. A ram is provided. Abraham names the place, the LORD will provide. The son of the promise is given back. The nations are still waiting on the blessing promised at the start.
Ur is a real city in the south of Mesopotamia. Haran is a real city in the north. Finding the cities does not date the morning he left. The timeline does not print a BC year for it.
The numbers for the stay that follows do not all measure the same thing. Genesis says Abram's descendants would be mistreated four hundred years (). Exodus says the stay in Egypt "was 430 years" (). Galatians counts 430 years from the promise to the law ().
