Lesson
Cain and Abel
The first worship, the first murder, and a mercy that still marks the murderer. No year is numbered. The first family is the setting.
October 7, 2026
Eve bears Cain, and she bears Abel. Abel keeps sheep. Cain works the ground. Both bring an offering. The LORD has regard for Abel and his offering, and not for Cain and his. Cain's face falls.
The text does not say the problem was vegetables. It says God had no regard for Cain and his offering, and then God speaks to Cain as a man who is still able to do right. If you do well, will you not be accepted? Sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, and you must rule over it. Hebrews later says Abel offered by , and that though he is dead, he still speaks. The difference the New Testament names is faith, not a chart of crops against lambs.
Cain speaks to Abel. They are in the field. Cain rises up and kills him. It is the first death in the story, and it is a brother. God asks a question He does not need answered. Where is Abel your brother? Cain answers with a lie that has become a proverb. Am I my brother's keeper?
The ground cries out
The blood cries from the ground. The ground that Cain works will no longer yield its strength to him. He will be a fugitive. Cain says the punishment is greater than he can bear, and that whoever finds him will kill him. God does not take the sentence back. He does put a mark on Cain, so that the vengeance of the moment does not multiply into seven lives. Anyone who kills Cain will be avenged sevenfold.
The mark is not explained. It is not a racial sign, and the chapter does not invite that reading. It is protection on a murderer, which is a strange mercy, and it is not forgiveness in the sense of a restored garden. Cain goes out from the presence of the LORD and settles in Nod, east of Eden. He builds a city and names it for his son Enoch. That Enoch is not the Enoch who walked with God. The names collide. The men do not.
His line invents things. Tents and herds. Lyres and pipes. Bronze and iron. And Lamech, who sings that he killed a man for striking him, and that if Cain is avenged sevenfold, Lamech is seventy-seven. The first city and the first song we are shown after the murder are not a . They are a boast.
Where a wife comes from
Cain has a wife, and the chapter does not introduce her. The short answer: Adam has other sons and daughters. The first generations marry inside that one family, because there is no one else. The law that later forbids a marriage of close kin is not on the books yet. The world is not full of unrelated peoples.
No Hebrew year is given for the murder. Seth is born when Adam is 130, and the text sets Seth in the place of Abel. The murder is before that birth. It sits in the lifetime of the first family, after the exile from the garden, before the counted line that runs to Noah.
Genesis does not name Cain's wife. It does say Adam "had other sons and daughters" (). The first marriages had to be inside that one family, long before the law against marrying a sister was given.
