Lesson

Creation

Six days, a seventh of rest, and a man and a woman made in the image of God. The text tells the week. It does not offer a BC year.

October 7, 2026

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The page does not open with a struggle between gods. It opens with one God, and a word.

The earth is without form, and dark, and the Spirit hovers. Then God says. Light. A firmament. Seas and dry land. Lights in the expanse to mark days and years and appointed times. Swarms in the water and birds in the air. Beasts on the ground. And then, as the last making, man.

Male and female. In His image. Blessed, and told to be fruitful and to rule the creatures, not one another as prey. The worth of a human life starts here.

God sees that it is very good. The seventh day He rests, and He blesses that day and makes it holy. Rest is not an afterthought. It is the close of the week He called good.

Two tellings, one making

Chapter 2 is not a second creation that forgot chapter 1. It is the same making, brought close. The land has no shrub yet, because it has not rained and there is no man to work the ground. God forms the man from dust and breathes into his nostrils. The man becomes a living soul.

A garden is planted, eastward in Eden. The tree of life is there, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The man may eat of every tree but one. The command is clear before the woman is even formed, so the later blame cannot hide in a rumor she started.

He is alone, and that is the first thing in the story called not good. God makes the woman from his side. The man names her as bone of his bones. They are naked and not ashamed. A marriage, before any city, before any king.

What the week is for

The days are numbered, and each has an evening and a morning, except the seventh, which is blessed rather than closed with that refrain. Christians read the word day in more than one way. What the text is doing does not wait on that question. God makes a world by speaking. He makes people as His image. He gives them a garden, a command, and each other. He rests.

There is no BC date on this part of the timeline, and there should not be. A year counted back from a king is a sum. Genesis 1 gives days, not a year.
