Lesson

Jacob and the Twelve

Isaac is 60 when the twins are born. Jacob is renamed Israel. Twelve sons become the tribes. The birthright is not a prize he steals without a God who had already chosen.

October 7, 2026

Isaac prays for Rebekah, because she is barren. The LORD answers. The children struggle in her womb, and she is told two nations are in her, and the older will serve the younger. Isaac is 60 when Esau and Jacob are born. On this timeline's count, that is year 2108.

Esau sells the birthright for a meal, and the text says he despised it. Later Jacob, coached by Rebekah, takes the blessing Isaac meant for Esau, with goatskin on his hands. Isaac blesses him. Esau weeps and is given a harder word. The deception is not pretty, and the book does not pretend it is. The choice of the younger is older than the deception. It was spoken before they were born. Paul will say so, about the purpose of God according to election, not about works.

Bethel, the wives, the name

Jacob runs. At Bethel he dreams of a stairway and messengers, and the LORD stands above it and repeats the promise made to Abraham: land, offspring like the dust, and in your offspring all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Jacob sets up the stone and calls the place the house of God.

In Paddan-aram he serves Laban seven years for Rachel and is given Leah. He serves seven more. The wives and their servants bear twelve sons and a daughter. The sons' names are explained in the story as praise, or as a plea, or as a wrestle. Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and later Benjamin, born on the road home, at the cost of Rachel's life.

At the Jabbok he wrestles until daybreak with a man who will not tell his name, who touches his hip, and who renames him Israel, because he has striven with God and with men and has prevailed. Jacob says he has seen God face to face. He limps into the promised land. The limp stays in the story. So does the name.

He is not a model of clean dealing. He is the man God chose to father the tribes, and the book tells the cheating and the fear and the altar. The timeline's year is the birth. The rest of his life runs down to Egypt, where he will stand before Pharaoh at 130 and call his years few and evil. That arrival is year 2238, and it belongs with Joseph's lesson, because Joseph is the reason the family is saved alive.

No find dates the stairway. Bethel is a real place in the hills. A place is not a year.
