Outside the Canon

A book can tell a true war and still not be Scripture. The test is not whether the church finds it moving. It is whether it was received as the writings God gave.

means the list a people receives as God's written word, not the list of books that happen to be old or useful. Israel received the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings. Jesus speaks of the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms as the Scriptures that must be fulfilled, and He speaks of the blood of the prophets from Abel to Zechariah in a way that runs from the start of the Hebrew Bible to near its end in the old order of the books. He does not quote 1 Maccabees as . Neither does Paul.

The early Greek-speaking read a wider set, because the collection that came to them sometimes included the extra books. That is a fact about book boxes. It is not yet a decision that every book in the box has the same voice. , who translated the Latin Bible, knew the Hebrew canon and labeled the extras as books to be read for example of life and instruction of manners, not to establish doctrine. The churches of the Reformation followed that line and printed the extras, when they printed them, apart from the Old Testament. The Roman church at Trent declared them Scripture. The disagreement is old, and it is a real disagreement, not a secret the Reformers invented.

1 Maccabees is the book that makes the question sharp, because it is good history. It dates events by the Seleucid era. It does not preach wild miracles on every page. A reader can trust its outline of the war more than he trusts a later legend, and still not stand in the pulpit and say "thus says the LORD" with its sentences. Truth and canon are not synonyms. A census record can be true. It is not a chapter of Isaiah.

2 Maccabees asks to be read as a summary meant to please and to profit. It includes the for the dead that later controversy made famous. That one scene is a reason the doctrinal stakes are not small. A book that is used to build a practice has to be asked whether God gave it. Usefulness to a later system is not the test. The test runs the other way.

This timeline marks these books with a broken ring and the words "not in the canon" so a visitor does not memorize the revolt as if it were Joshua. The shaded band is the same warning in a larger shape. The years were full. The Bible's prophetic voice was not adding pages. When the voice comes again, it will say the kingdom of heaven is at hand, and it will point to Jesus.
