The Nature of a Covenant
A bond God makes. Not a bargain between equals. Know which oath you are reading before you move its promises.

Abraham does not walk the pieces. A smoking fire pot and a flaming torch pass between them. In the old form, the one who passes the pieces is taking the curse of the oath on himself. Here, God passes. That is the shape to keep in your eye. A can be God binding God.
Not every covenant is that one. Sinai binds the people to obey, and binds God to be their God. David is a promise to a house. The new covenant is God writing His law on hearts and not remembering sins. If you take a promise from one oath and spend it on another, you will misread both.
What to notice on a card
- Does the text use the word covenant, or are we supplying it?
- Who swears?
- What is the sign?
- What is promised, and to whom?
- What does the New Testament say this oath became?
The Covenants is the list. The disagreements that belong to a card are written on the card. They are not smoothed out here.
