The Lord's Prayer

The pattern Jesus gave. The Father's name and kingdom come before bread, debts, and danger.

September 25, 2026

Luke's form is shorter, prayed because the disciples asked to be taught.

Some later copies of Matthew add a doxology, "for thine is the kingdom." The earliest copies, and Luke, do not. The petitions are the either way.

The order is the teaching

Our Father comes before the requests. The name is hallowed before the bread is asked. A prayer that starts with the self feels empty because it skipped the Person.

Forgive us, as we forgive, is not a bargain that earns pardon. It is the family resemblance of people who have been forgiven. sits next to the prayer on purpose.

Lead us not into temptation is a plea about trial and the evil one, not a claim that God tempts. James says God tempts no one.

The card on the lookup shelf is Prayers of Scripture, under the prayers of Jesus. This page is the pattern. That card is the place to find it again beside Gethsemane and the prayer of John 17.

This is a deeper teaching under Coming to the Father. Its home is The Gospel.
